What TWAIN is
TWAIN defines a standard software protocol and application programming interface (API) for communication between software applications and image acquisition devices. Examples of TWAIN devices are scanners, digital cameras, image capture boards, etc.  In a nutshell it is a means to capture/import images directly into a software application, such as a paint program, from an external device.
